Description
An umbo or shield boss must be installed on a wood or metal frame to build a shield. Used to protect the hand of the user, it's the central piece of any center grip shield, such as the one used throughout history by various groups such as the Norse Vikings, germanic tribes, Roman legionaries, Celts, or Scots. From round shields to scutum, bucklers, and oval shields, umbos were used to reinforce the center of the shield against big blows, as well as a bludgeon to punch and push. The thickness of this umbo makes it viable not only for LARP and reenactment but also for SCA combat and live blade.
