Tesserarius, The Watch Commander

Veteran soldiers of the legion on the path toward the role of centurion were often given the responsibility of protecting the fort, either on campaign or as part of the garrisoned forces. These guard commanders were called tesserarius and were mandated to enforce strict discipline, for the safety of the army rested on their shoulders.

Inspired by Roman centurions’ armor and gear, this historical fantasy LARP set evokes a sense of stern martial discipline. It includes many protective pieces, the more striking one being the iconic crested helmet, which was custom made for this project. The helmet was made of stainless steel and studded leather, and displays a brass decoration on the front featuring the wolf emblem of the city of Rome.

The armor itself is segmented and made of studded black leather riveted over red leather, with large plates of stainless steel on the front, etched with more wolf iconography. It supports the large pauldrons and the same black on red pattern is repeated on all the armor accessories such as the leather bracers and combat greaves. The thighs are protected by a classic greco-roman combat skirt made of long leather bands, reinforced with brass plated metal decorations.

A unique ornate medieval style belt also displays engraved latin words associated with the famous Roman general Julius Caesar, “Veni Vidi Vici”. The character wields a Roman-glaive-style LARP sword and proudly wears a coyote skin to add the finishing touch to his centurion look.
